“Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.” William Randolf Hearst

As I mentioned earlier, “Hank Super - Genius” was my first published short story and it came as the first assignment in my first writing class. I took a beginning writing class even though I had a Masters Degree in English and had taught writing from grades three through college because I feel that no matter how much you may feel like you know, it’s important to keep relearning your craft. The assignment grew into a biographical sketch of a boy I barely remembered from first grade. I let my imagination fill in the spaces and create situations for us to interact and the assignment blossomed into a short story. It was the first literary story I wrote; it won an Honorable Mention in Writer’s Digest’s 2001 Writing Competition in the Genre Short Story category. Another story, “The Final Chapter,” was a Finalist in Glimmer Train’s January 2008 Family Matters Contest. The Chaffin Journal published the story in its 2099 anthology. Twenty of my stories have been published with several more “out there” looking for a home.

I’ve also written a collection of twenty-five short stories based on Cassie Whittler, a little girl growing up in the South, and her relationship with her deaf grandmother. Two of the stories have been published: “A Grandmother’s Garden” and “Hidden Treasures.”
